Why do we need Hospice Services?
Hospice care is both compassionate and cost-effective. Hospice care is provided to patients suffering from a life-limiting illness who cannot care for themselves. Did you know:
- Generally, people prefer to die at home or in a setting similar to home instead of a hospital.
- The number of individuals over 65 is expected to double (approximately) over the next twenty years.
- As the number of senior citizens increases, hospitals use more resources, increasing costs and lengthening wait times. We aim to improve the quality of life of palliative patients and caregivers while reducing the burden on health care systems.
- A hospice bed costs about $470/day compared to $1100/day for an acute care hospital bed.
Hospice care aims to provide patients with the best quality of life possible. Moreover, hospice care offers bereavement support and aftercare for families.
What is Palliative Care?
Palliative care is a type of healthcare for patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses. Palliative care helps patients achieve the best possible quality of life up until the end of life. Palliative care is often referred to as end-of-life care or comfort care.
- It focuses on the concerns of patients and their families.
- Pays close attention to physical symptoms, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their families
- Ensures that care is respectful and supportive of patient dignity and patient choices
- It respects the social and cultural needs of all patients
- Palliative care is most effectively delivered by a team approach involving medical staff, social workers, spiritual leaders, volunteers and compassionate communities
*The attitude is living with an illness instead of dying from a life-threatening illness.
